Food For Thought: The king will still rule over digital slaves and techno serfs – Is 'technofeudalism' the future for humanity?
"Hyper because it's everywhere all at once. You can't really escape the techno world that we're living in. You can try, but soon it will be almost inescapable. They're working on tracking systems that are already being released for white collar jobs where they're installed on your machine and they track practically everything you do from your hand movements on your mouse to your eye movements as you work. They take random screenshots to make sure you're 'working'. If you get up to go to the bathroom that's designated as unpaid. It's everywhere all the time. Your phone is tracking you. Your TV in many cases is tracking you. Other 'internet of thing' objects are tracking you. It's essentially an authoritarian system. I would argue it's a stage of capitalism. To argue capitalism is dead is a little strange. It's not late stage capitalism because we don't know when it's going to end. We don't know what's coming next."
"All these technofeudal lords who will drive us to extinction if we let them remain in control of the remarkable machinery that we need to put in the service of humanity."
"A few months ago, the well-known economist Yanis Varoufakis, told Nexus that capitalism is dead — replaced by something he calls 'technofeudalism.' He claims that without even noticing, we’ve all become digital serfs, working to make the tech giants even richer. It sounds dramatic, but is his claim justified?
"In our first debate, we’re joined by economist Steve Keen and writer and podcast host B Duncan Moench. In the second, we’ll hear from economist Tommaso Valletti and data-rights advocate David Carroll, to talk about what this all means for us and whether there’s any way out of it."
