Artificial Intelligence: AI-infused vehicles in 2027 – Federal law mandates AI cameras in all new car.
"A 2021 federal law (Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, Section 24220, [under Biden administration]) mandates that all new US passenger vehicles starting in 2027 must include 'Advanced Impaired Driving Prevention Technology'. These appear to be taking the shape of passive AI systems using infrared cameras, biometric sensors, and behavioural tracking to detect driver impairment and automatically intervene by limiting speed, pulling over, or shutting down the vehicle.
"While intended to improve safety, the mandate raises major concerns about constant surveillance, massive data collection shared with insurers and third parties, high rates of false positives, and the erosion of personal freedom in what has long been a symbol of American autonomy."
"'It's [the data] definitely not going to stay in the vehicle. It's tracking all kinds of visual signals and they're usually sending them up to some kind of automated cloud. A handful of large automakers take this behavioural data and bury it in your terms of service. You give permission for the automaker to sell that data. They're actively selling it to companies that create an automated risk score on an individual and sell that to insurance agencies.… There have been reports from all across the US people who have experienced sudden massive spikes in their insurance premiums or sometimes just had their insurance policies cancelled altogether based solely on the data that was harvested from their own cars without their explicit informed understanding."
"Where does all this data go and who ultimately owns that data?" This is where the massive build up of data centres come in.
