"The Monroe Doctrine was a foreign policy statement issued by President Monroe way back in 1823. It warned European nations to stay OUT of the Western Hemisphere and stated that, in exchange, the US would not interfere in European conflicts. Roosevelt (TR) in 1904 used it to claim the US had police-like authority in Latin America. Fast forward to later in the 20th century, and the concern was not Europe, so much as the Soviet Union. In the 21st, that threat in America's backyard is China.

"Monroe is a somewhat unremarkable president who isn't discussed often. But his policy of 'our hemisphere' has endured, in one form or another, for 203 years. And it helps explain a LOT of US geopolitical decision-making."
